Prof. Dr. Rami Burstein | Harvard Medical School | United States

Rami Burstein is an internationally recognized neuroscientist and physician–scientist whose work has fundamentally advanced the understanding of pain and migraine neurobiology. He is a Professor of Anesthesia and Neuroscience at Harvard Medical School and holds the John Hedley-Whyte Professorship of Anesthesia and Neuroscience, with longstanding affiliations at leading Harvard teaching hospitals. Trained in biology, anatomy, and neuroscience, his research bridges basic and translational science, focusing on the trigeminovascular system, central sensitization, cortical spreading depression, and the neural mechanisms underlying migraine and chronic pain. Burstein’s discoveries have reshaped contemporary models of migraine pathophysiology and directly influenced therapeutic strategies, including mechanism-based approaches to migraine treatment. He has authored and co-authored an extensive body of peer-reviewed publications in high-impact journals, reflecting sustained scientific influence and leadership in pain research. His scholarly output has received more than 30,600 citations, with an h-index of 91 and an i10-index of 177, underscoring both the depth and breadth of his contributions. Through research excellence, mentorship, and academic leadership, Burstein continues to shape modern neuroscience and clinical pain medicine.
